UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killings of civilians by the Egyptian Army on Wednesday. “I was shocked to learn what happened in Egypt. I condemn it,” he said. In an exclusive interview with Hamid Mir of Geo TV, Ban Ki-moon came out openly against the Egyptian Army for the first time and said that the UN was gathering information about the incidents in Egypt.
He said: “I will continue to urge all the stakeholders to resolve their issues through dialogue.” In response to a question about the drone attacks, Ban Ki-moon condemned the killings of innocent people in drone attacks and said: “I am sorry to the people of Pakistan over the killing of innocent civilians in drone attacks.”
Ban Ki-moon was hopeful that Pakistan and India will continue the dialogue to resolve the Kashmir dispute. Hamid Mir asked him as to why the UN was not doing anything to implement its resolutions on Kashmir, Ban Ki-moon said that the UN resolution was a sensitive issue. The UN military mission in India and Pakistan has a very limited role. He urged Pakistan and India to start some confidence building measures to defuse the tension on the LoC.
He said that Pakistani and Indian prime ministers will meet in New York next month and will have a good opportunity to discuss the issues between the two countries.
Hamid Mir also asked a question about the impression that the UN had become a tool in the hands of powerful nations to suppress the weak nations. Ban Ki-moon disagreed with Hamid Mir and said that the UN was playing a vital role to help the poor nations all over the world. He praised the role of Pakistan Army in the UN peacekeeping missions.
