I never liked birthday parties as a child. I think it was the end of a good time, rather than aging, that I feared. Even now, when I am no longer able to give my age in fractional time-units without sounding like an insecure thespian, I have a dislike of birthdays.  It's not the planning of the event or the execution of the festivities that I dread. It's The End of the Affair. You see, I just can't believe that after all that energy, hard work, crying, despairing, consumption of confectionary and throwing around of confetti, after all that drama, everyone just goes home.
